It is the time of year where artists in all fields get to create a beautiful world of false acceptance through self celebration, in other words, “Award Season”. The Oscars, Grammys, Golden globes are wonderful delays in stars lives of the truth that they hate themselves. Self hatred is one thing they all can share in and there is no better way to mask self hatred than to pretend to like each other. Even if some don’t exactly hate themselves, they can be rest assured that someone else does, probably me.
Sally Field once famously said upon accepting her prestigous trophy, “You like me, you really, really like me!!!” It was a fantastic moment in insecurity history in the great cocoon of false support. What she really meant was: “I hate me, I really, really hate me!!!” It is what these wonderful award shows are all about, they are integral in the perpetuation of the arts.
As we are already aware of, art should always be judged. It is imperative that there be rankings and definitive winners and losers when it comes to all forms of personal expression. Losers must be reminded that they failed and are not as good as one of their peers who perform the exact same thing that they do. If it was not the same thing, then there would never be categories. Then what would you have? The losers simply did not do it loud and hard enough, a simple lack of determination. If one would simply have drive and focus that noone else could possibly have, then God will help you win for your performance as a retarted school teacher.
Winners must realize how important these acknowledgments and trophies are to the people of the world. The people are not only interested in your form of art, but that they be pernamently idolized for it in a form of a quirky logo trophy in the form of the company flipping the bill for the theatre. Receiving personal fame and fortunes coupled with having your word heard by millions of people is not enough. It seems empty, unless 1000 anonymous Academy members vote your performance better than someone else’s. How else are we supposed to know what is good or not? The reason why rapper Kanye West stormed the MTV European Music awards stage when he (gasp) lost in the best video category, is because he knew his at was better than the other guy’s art. How did he know if he was not voted the winner? Easy, he spent more money on his video than the other band did. He had Pamela Anderson, and stole Evel Kinevels persona, thats how.
The only true credibility is the one we create. You can’t argue with the 2007 Outstanding Blog Comic winner at this years annual Blerd award show. I’m bringing home the blerdy for you people.
