Tollbooth Friend
a poem by Nathan Craig
A turnpike is for freedom.
For not being reminded of the costs involved with driving.
Road riding adventurism.
1 payment, not 4.
For the story.
So happy is the ride
the toll is commemorative.
The tollbooth is a passage.
Take my money sir, how many miles to Cleveland?
155.
Oh… You have a map.
A list of mileage?
The world is what you have.
A list of things important to it.
The elements of life and a way to breath it in.
The building blocks of friendship
Answers
A look in your eye.
Needy but genuine.
Knowingly detached.
A man amongst travelers
A man without partners.
You could see the world but you choose to be a talisman.
You could see the world.
Some day.
You will make your own list.
List of mileage, list of images
Fitting the faces you’ve greeted and guided.
Can I have quarters?
I travel to get where I’m going.
I pay the price.
The journey is not a cliché
It’s an accomplishment
By us. Friend.
